Research Intern

EPIC-India is looking to have a Research Intern who is enthusiastic to work in the field of developmental economics, is a keen learner and have some experience in field research and data analysis.

Location: UChicago Center in Delhi Start Date: Accepting applications on a rolling basis

The Intern will be engaged in design, implementation and analysis of our projects and may also be required to write and present findings of the work to external partners, and therefore should have well developed interpersonal and communication skills. The Intern may also perform other duties as assigned.

The position offers the rare opportunity to work directly with senior researchers at the University of Chicago. The position will be full-time for a period of 3-6 months.

Qualifications:

Education:

Currently enrolled or recently graduated from Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in public policy, economics, statistics, environmental science, engineering or a similar field is required

Competencies:

  • Knowledge and understanding of energy and environmental policy literature is required; work/research experience in the area is strongly preferred
  • Outstanding interpersonal skills and ability to maintain positive relationships with field staff and internal/ external partners required
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to present data in a simple and straightforward way for non-technical audiences required
  • Familiar with any statistical software like R, Stata or Python would be a plus

Research Associate – Weather Forecasts Experiment

The Energy Policy Institute at the University of Chicago (EPIC) is interested in hiring an employee on a six-month contract, with a possibility of extension, to oversee the implementation of a survey and field experiment on farmer’s responses to weather forecasts and insurance in India.

Location: Telangana, India Start Date: Immediate

The employee will work closely on this project with Prof. Fiona Burlig (Harris School of Public Policy at UChicago, Energy Policy Institute at UChicago, and NBER) and Prof Amir Jina (Harris School of Public Policy at UChicago, Energy Policy Institute at UChicago) who are the principal investigators in this study. Tasks may include, among others, interacting with agricultural extension officers; coordinating survey-operations with village leaders; training and overseeing a survey enumeration team; and conducting surveys.

Skills and Requirements

  • Proficiency in Stata/R and SurveyCTO (Experience coding surveys in Survey CTO and conducting high-frequency checks will be required and tested)
  • Interest in (and experience with) the design and implementation of field studies, particularly in rural settings.
  • Creative problem-solving ability and strong communication skills.
  • Superior attention to detail.
  • Ability to articulate complex ideas and summarize effectively.
  • Excellent presentation and writing skills.
  • Ability to balance multiple assignments.
  • Strong understanding of economics and econometrics.
  • Team player.
  • Fluent in Hindi (Telugu is a plus)

 Qualifications

  • Bachelor or master’s degree in economics, international development, or relevant social science or science disciplines.
  • Strong track record of outstanding academic performance.
  • Previous field experience of 1-2 years or more.
  • Indian nationals are strongly encouraged to apply.
