Cities are the engine of economic growth in the developing world. Yet, these same cities also pose fundamental environmental challenges. This project involves collaborative inter-disciplinary research examining the impact of long-term urbanization in India on ambient temperatures, which in turn have been causally linked to implication on urban energy use.

We have developed a dataset of surface temperatures and urban heat islands across large and small cities in India using satellite data made available by The National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) and U.S. Air Force Defense Meteorological Satellite Program (DMSP). This project will form the first examination of the long-term and changing relationship between fast-growing cities and associated heat islands across ~300 cities of India and produce a unique dataset that may also seed future research
