Senior Research Manager (Emissions Trading Scheme)

EPICIndia is seeking a Senior Manager to execute innovative ideas related to energy and environmental policy, manage research, field teams, and play an instrumental role in developing and expanding its pipeline of applied economics research projects. This position will specifically support the groundbreaking Emissions Trading Scheme (ETS) program at EPIC India and provide the candidate an opportunity to work closely with EPICIndia affiliated researchers, collaborators, and senior management on a variety of organizational tasks. 

Location: Mumbai or New Delhi, India with frequent travel to other field location(s) in India Start Date: August 1 or earlier

Position Description 

EPIC-India is seeking a Senior Manager to execute innovative ideas related to energy and environmental policy, manage research, field teams, and play an instrumental role in developing and expanding its pipeline of applied economics research projects. This position will specifically support the groundbreaking Emissions Trading Scheme (ETS) program at EPIC India and provide the candidate an opportunity to work closely with EPIC-India affiliated researchers, collaborators, and senior management on a variety of organizational tasks. 

 Responsibilities 

  • Work closely with collaborators and local research teams to drive project planning and support (including but not limited to) providing guidance on research design, field planning, data collection, data management, and preliminary analysis. 
  • Manage and mentor junior research and policy staff members and collaborators including interns, research and policy associates. This position may also have line management responsibilities for managers in the future 
  • Support EPIC India in all areas of project execution, maintaining integrity of research design and generating high-quality research outputs. 
  • Conduct background research and policy reviews on various energy and environment related topics 
  • The candidate will manage relationships with diverse set of stakeholders such as EPIC India’s research affiliates, experts, government officials at different levels and partner organizations to drive progress on ETS projects across multiple states. 
  • Communicate (both in writing, presentations, and speaking) effectively with internal and external stakeholders to drive progress on EPIC-India’s research projects 
  • Write materials that “translate” economic research and other EPIC-India messages into policy outreach and communications, including reports, articles, op-eds, blogs, and evaluation summaries 
  • The position will lead fundraising, writing technical proposals, donor deliverables, work on budgets and work plans and will be overall responsible to drive forward different workstreams independently. 
  • Assist in preparation of detailed project budgets and research project work plans in coordination with operations team and PIs, ensure project activities are aligned with project budgets. 
  • Manage ethical compliance for all program activities. 
  • Organize meetings, events, workshops, policy dialogues with collaborating partner organizations. 
  • Other tasks related to the execution of EPIC India research projects as assigned by the line manager 
  • The position may need to support other EPIC India programs from time to time. 

 Qualifications 

 Education 

  • Master’s degree in economics, management, public policy, environmental sciences or related discipline 

 Experience 

  • 6-8 years of work experience in a role with project-based assignments, with substantial external-facing components/ experience in monitoring and evaluation projects, and at least 3 year of direct project management experience 
  • Experience of working with state governments in India is a plus.
  • Experience in environment regulation and/or carbon markets is highly desirable. 

 Competencies  

  • Fluent in English and Hindi 
  • Demonstrated ability to manage relationships with partner organizations. 
  • A sound understanding and/or demonstrated interest in energy and environment policy. 
  • Strong track record of outstanding academic/ professional performance 
  • Strong written and oral communication skills 
  • Experience managing and supervising junior staff members. 
  • Superior time-management and organizational skills 
  • Ability to articulate complex ideas into impactful proposals/reports. 
  • Strong communication and writing skills are essential. 
  • High degree of ownership and ability to drive forward workstreams, independently.  
  • Attention to detail and ability to execute patiently, and diligently. 
  • Excellent management and organizational skills along with strong quantitative skills 
  • Flexible, self-motivating, able to manage multiple tasks efficiently, and a team player. 
  • Strong communication, and presentation skills 

 Working Conditions
