Research Associate – Data (DPIC)

Data, Policy, and Innovation Centre (DPIC) is seeking a full-time Research Associate-Data to work closely with researchers and project teams to clean, analyze, and manage data for impact evaluations and research studies. The ideal candidate will have strong analytical skills, attention to detail, and a passion for using data to inform policy and improve social programs.

About the Trust

The University of Chicago Trust (the Trust) is a charitable trust in India, established in 2008 by alumnus of The University of Chicago. The Trust’s objectives are to provide opportunities for grants to support educational programs, research programs and activities for the betterment of India.

About the Unit

Data, Policy, and Innovation Centre (DPIC) is a 5-year strategic collaboration between Government of Odisha (GoOdisha) and University of Chicago Trust, India. The Centre, funded by GoOdisha and housed at the E&IT Department, will enable rigorous, evidence-based governance, using new advances in econometrics, data-science, and machine learning. The Centre will carry out research, monitoring & impact evaluation, and project implementation in the sectors of Energy and Environment, Health, Education, Agriculture, and Water & Sanitation. In addition, the Centre will create a of hub for modern data analysis, that will focus on the use of data to improve the decision-making process in the state of Odisha and lend support by providing insights in effectiveness of existing programs and suggesting changes to achieve objectives of the government.

Position Description

DPIC is seeking a full-time Research Associate-Data to work closely with researchers and project teams to clean, analyze, and manage data for impact evaluations and research studies. The ideal candidate will have strong analytical skills, attention to detail, and a passion for using data to inform policy and improve social programs.

Responsibilities

  • Clean, organize, and validate large datasets to ensure accuracy and consistency.
  • Maintain comprehensive documentation of data sources, transformations, and workflows.
  • Assist in statistical analysis and interpretation of research findings.
  • Perform analysis using statistical software (e.g., Stata, R, Python) and generate visualizations to communicate research results effectively.
  • Provide support to researchers in designing research methodologies and sampling strategies.
  • Document methodologies, data sources, and analytical techniques used in research projects.
  • Engage with relevant officials on different aspects of the project, and to facilitate data access and management between the involved parties
  • Develop and disseminate necessary project materials and collaterals targeting a wide range of actors such as policymakers and academic researchers
  • Travel to field to monitor and assess the progress in field work, including supervision of the field staff during surveys and quality checks (if needed)
  • Any other related tasks on an as needed basis, including (but not limited to) desk/literature survey and support in preparation of meetings and presentations for developing new partnerships, as assigned by DPIC’s leadership, or Research Manager.

Qualifications

Education

  • A master’s degree in Economics, Statistics, Environment Policy or Science or another related field. If candidate has a Bachelors degree in the related field, at least three years of work experience

Experience

  • Minimum of 2-3 years of experience in conducting data analysis and research support work within the development sector.

Competencies

  • Ability to compile, clean, organize and harmonize large datasets and convert them into user-friendly formats.
  • Excellent data analysis and visualization skills
  • Knowledge of basic econometrics and statistical analysis
  • Experience of working with large datasets including administrative data and geospatial data
  • Proficient in programming languages such as Stata, Python or R, GIS tools for data analysis and visualization.
  • Ability to work collaboratively in interdisciplinary teams and adapt to evolving project requirements.
  • Passion for the development sector and a commitment to making a positive impact.
  • Fluent in English (written and oral) and working knowledge of Oriya and /or Hindi
  • Strong communication, and presentation skills
